Caribou Coffee was founded by John Puckett and his wife, Kim Puckett. The idea for the company came to them during a trip to Alaska, where they were inspired by the breathtaking scenery and the caribou they encountered. The first Caribou Coffee shop opened on December 14, 1992, in Edina, Minnesota.

In 2005, Caribou Coffee became a publicly traded company on the NASDAQ under the symbol CBOU. However, in 2012, the company was acquired by Joh. A. Benckiser, a German private equity group, and subsequently taken private.
