Rome is the capital city of Italy, and also serves as the capital of the Lazio region. It is the country's most populated city, with over 2.8 million residents. Rome is located in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula, along the shores of the Tiber River. The city is renowned for its rich history, its art, architecture, culture, and its significant influence in numerous sectors such as law, warfare, philosophy, sculpture, painting, and literature.
History[edit]
Rome's history spans over 28 centuries. The city's origins are traced back to the mythical founding of Rome by Romulus in 753 BC. Rome was initially a Kingdom, which evolved into a Roman Republic in 509 BC, then later a Roman Empire in 27 BC. During the five centuries of its existence, the Roman Empire became one of the most powerful economic, cultural, political and military forces in the world.
Geography[edit]
Rome is situated in the Lazio region of central Italy on the Tiber river. The original settlement developed on hills that faced onto a ford beside the Tiber Island, the only natural ford of the river. The Rome of the Kings was built on seven hills: the Aventine Hill, the Caelian Hill, the Capitoline Hill, the Esquiline Hill, the Palatine Hill, the Quirinal Hill, and the Viminal Hill.
Culture[edit]
Rome is a major world center for the arts, including visual arts, theatre, music, and cinema. The city is home to the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, and the Colosseum, among other notable sites. Rome has also been an inspiration for many artists and writers over the centuries and continues to be a significant cultural and artistic hub today.
Economy[edit]
Rome's economy is characterized by the presence of many multinational corporations, governmental and international organizations, including the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the World Food Programme (WFP).
