Ohio is a U.S. state located in the Midwestern region of the country. It is the 34th largest by area, the 7th most populous, and the 10th most densely populated of the 50 United States. The state's capital and largest city is Columbus.

History[edit]

The area of Ohio has been inhabited by indigenous peoples for thousands of years. European exploration of the region began in the 17th century with French and British expeditions. Ohio became a U.S. territory in 1787 and achieved statehood in 1803 as the 17th state to join the Union.

Geography[edit]

Ohio is bordered by Lake Erie to the north, Pennsylvania to the east, West Virginia to the southeast, Kentucky to the southwest, Indiana to the west, and Michigan to the northwest. The state's geography includes the Appalachian Mountains in the southeast, the Great Lakes region in the north, and fertile plains in the west.

The state is known for its contributions to music, literature, and sports, including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, and the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton.
