Hereward Carrington (17 October 1880 – 26 December 1959) was a well-known British-born American investigator of psychic phenomena and author. His subjects encompassed both scientific and non-scientific fields, including parapsychology, philosophy, and vegetarianism.

Early life[edit]

Carrington was born in St Helier, Jersey in 1880. After moving to the United States in 1889, he began his career as a journalist in Boston, Massachusetts.

Career[edit]

In 1907, Carrington joined the American Society for Psychical Research (ASPR), where he worked in the capacity of an investigator. There, he developed a particular interest in the field of paranormal phenomena.

Carrington is known for his investigations into mediums, which he conducted with a scientific approach. He exposed the tricks of fraudulent mediums and wrote extensively on the methods they used to deceive their audiences. His most famous work in this area is The Physical Phenomena of Spiritualism, published in 1907.

In addition to his work in parapsychology, Carrington had a keen interest in diet and health. He was a proponent of vegetarianism and wrote several books on the subject, including The Natural Food of Man and Vitality, Fasting and Nutrition.

Legacy[edit]

Carrington's work has had a lasting impact on the field of parapsychology. His rigorous approach to the investigation of psychic phenomena has served as a model for later researchers. His writings on diet and health have also remained influential.
