Guanabenz is an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist that is commonly used as an antihypertensive agent. It works by reducing the amount of norepinephrine available to bind to alpha-2 receptors in the brain, which in turn reduces the activity of the sympathetic nervous system and lowers blood pressure.

Mechanism of Action[edit]

Guanabenz works by stimulating alpha-2 adrenergic receptors in the brain. This reduces the release of norepinephrine, a neurotransmitter that increases heart rate and blood pressure. By reducing the amount of norepinephrine, Guanabenz effectively lowers blood pressure.

Uses[edit]

Guanabenz is primarily used to treat hypertension, or high blood pressure. It may be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents.

Side Effects[edit]

Common side effects of Guanabenz include drowsiness, dry mouth, and fatigue. Less common side effects can include depression, constipation, and impotence.

Contraindications[edit]

Guanabenz should not be used in patients with a known hypersensitivity to the drug. It should also be used with caution in patients with severe coronary insufficiency, recent myocardial infarction, or cerebrovascular disease.

Drug Interactions[edit]

Guanabenz may interact with other medications, including other antihypertensive agents, antidepressants, and sedatives. It is important to inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are currently taking.
