Dietland is an American television series that premiered on AMC on June 4, 2018. The series is based on the novel of the same name by Sarai Walker, published in 2015. Dietland explores a multitude of issues facing women today – including patriarchy, body shaming, and the beauty industry – through the eyes of its protagonist, Plum Kettle.
Plot[edit]
Dietland follows the journey of Plum Kettle (Joy Nash), a ghostwriter for the editor of one of New York's hottest fashion magazines. Struggling with self-image and fed up with how she's treated by society, Plum sets out on a wildly complicated road to self-awakening. Along the way, she becomes involved with a radical feminist group, "Jennifer", which conducts violent acts of resistance against the mistreatment of women. As Plum begins to notice the world's injustices more acutely, she starts to question her own beliefs and embarks on a dangerous path to self-discovery.

Production[edit]
The series was developed by Marti Noxon, who also serves as an executive producer alongside Sarai Walker, the author of the book. Dietland was ordered to series by AMC in 2017, with a 10-episode first season. The show was filmed in New York City and other locations.
Reception[edit]
Dietland received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its timely and provocative themes, as well as Joy Nash's performance. However, the series struggled to find a broad audience, leading to its cancellation after one season.
Themes and Analysis[edit]
Dietland tackles themes of body image, self-acceptance, and the societal pressures women face to conform to certain standards of beauty. The show also delves into issues of feminism, activism, and the impact of violence in the fight for gender equality. Through its darkly comedic lens, Dietland offers a critique of the beauty industry and the objectification of women's bodies, while also exploring the journey of personal growth and empowerment.
