Marseille is the second-largest city in France and the largest city on the Mediterranean coast. It is located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region and is the capital of the Bouches-du-Rhône department.

History[edit]

Marseille was founded by the Greeks in 600 BC and is one of the oldest cities in Europe. The city has a rich history and has been a major center for trade and immigration since its establishment.

Geography[edit]

Marseille is located on the southeastern coast of France, along the Mediterranean Sea. The city is surrounded by hills and has a number of natural harbors. The Calanques National Park, a rugged coastal area with deep valleys and turquoise waters, is located to the south of the city.

Economy[edit]

Marseille has a diverse economy, with a strong focus on trade and industry. The city is home to the largest commercial port in France and is a major center for the oil and gas industry. Other important sectors include tourism, manufacturing, and services.

Culture[edit]

Marseille is known for its vibrant culture and is a hub for art, music, and gastronomy. The city is home to several museums, including the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations, and hosts a number of festivals throughout the year. Marseille's cuisine is influenced by its diverse population and its proximity to the sea, with seafood playing a prominent role.

Transport[edit]

Marseille is well-connected by a network of roads, railways, and an international airport, Marseille Provence Airport. The city also has a comprehensive public transport system, which includes buses, trams, and a metro system.

Education[edit]

Marseille is home to several universities and higher education institutions, including the Aix-Marseille University, one of the largest universities in the French-speaking world.

Sport[edit]

Marseille is known for its passion for football, with the city's main team, Olympique de Marseille, being one of the most successful in France.
