Urushiol-induced contact dermatitis (pronunciation: yoo-roo-shee-ol in-doost kon-takt der-muh-tie-tis) is a type of inflammatory skin condition that occurs when the skin comes into contact with urushiol, an oily resin found in plants of the Anacardiaceae family, such as poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac.

Etymology

The term "Urushiol" is derived from Urushi, the Japanese name for the lacquer tree (Toxicodendron vernicifluum), which contains high amounts of urushiol. The term "dermatitis" is derived from the Greek words derma meaning skin and itis meaning inflammation.

Symptoms

The primary symptom of urushiol-induced contact dermatitis is a rash that often appears as a linear streak of small blisters. Other symptoms may include itching, redness, swelling, and inflammation of the skin. The rash usually appears within 24 to 72 hours after exposure to urushiol.

Causes

Urushiol-induced contact dermatitis is caused by an allergic reaction to urushiol. When the skin comes into contact with urushiol, it triggers an immune response, leading to inflammation and the characteristic symptoms of the condition.

Treatment

Treatment for urushiol-induced contact dermatitis primarily involves relieving the symptoms. This may include the use of topical corticosteroids, antihistamines, and calamine lotion. In severe cases, oral corticosteroids may be prescribed.

Prevention

Prevention of urushiol-induced contact dermatitis involves avoiding contact with plants that contain urushiol. This can be achieved by wearing protective clothing when in areas where these plants are found and by washing the skin immediately after potential exposure.
