Types of Rape

Rape (pronounced /reɪp/) is a type of sexual assault usually involving sexual intercourse or other forms of sexual penetration carried out against a person without that person's consent. The term is often used interchangeably with sexual assault, a closely related but legally distinct concept. The etymology of the word "rape" comes from the Latin rapere, meaning "to seize or take by force".

There are several types of rape, including but not limited to:

Date Rape

Date rape refers to sexual assault that occurs between two individuals who know each other, often in the context of a date or other romantic encounter. The term is often used to highlight the betrayal of trust involved in these incidents.

Marital Rape

Marital rape or spousal rape is the act of sexual intercourse with one's spouse without the spouse's consent. It is a form of domestic violence and sexual abuse.

Statutory Rape

Statutory rape is sexual activity in which one person is below the age required to legally consent to the behavior. Despite it often being associated with child sexual abuse, it can also refer to a sexual relationship between an adult and a person under the age of consent.

Gang Rape

Gang rape occurs when a group of people participate in the rape of a single victim. It involves multiple perpetrators committing sexual assault against one victim.

Prison Rape

Prison rape is rape occurring in prison. It is a serious issue in prisons around the world. The perpetrators can be inmates, and in rare cases prison staff.

War Rape

War rape occurs when soldiers or civilians rape persons during war or conflict. It is a serious violation of human rights.
