Tobramycin Sulfate

Tobramycin Sulfate (pronounced: toh-brah-MY-sin SUL-fate) is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat various types of bacterial infections, including those in the lungs, skin, and urinary tract.

Etymology

The term "Tobramycin" is derived from the bacterium Streptomyces tenebrarius, from which it was first isolated in the 1970s. "Sulfate" refers to the salt form of the drug, which is used for its improved solubility and stability.

Usage

Tobramycin Sulfate works by inhibiting the production of protein in bacteria, thereby stopping bacterial growth. It is often used in combination with other antibiotics to treat severe infections. It is also used in the treatment of cystic fibrosis patients with Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections.
