Spanakopita

Spanakopita (/ˌspænəkoʊˈpiːtə/, from Greek σπανάκι, spanáki, spinach, and πίτα, píta, pie) is a savory Greek pastry with a filling of chopped spinach, feta cheese, onions or scallions, egg, and seasoning. The filling is wrapped or layered in phyllo (filo) pastry with butter or olive oil, either in a large pan from which individual servings are cut, or rolled into individual triangular servings.

Etymology

The word Spanakopita is derived from the Greek words "spanáki" (σπανάκι), meaning spinach, and "píta" (πίτα), meaning pie.

Ingredients

  • Spinach: A leafy green vegetable that is the main ingredient in Spanakopita.
  • Feta Cheese: A brined curd cheese traditionally made in Greece, used to give the dish its distinctive flavor.
  • Onions or Scallions: Used to add flavor to the dish.
  • Egg: Used to bind the ingredients together.
  • Phyllo: A very thin unleavened dough used for making pastries such as Spanakopita in Middle Eastern and Balkan cuisines.
  • Butter or Olive Oil: Used to brush the phyllo pastry and give it a golden color when baked.

Preparation

The preparation of Spanakopita involves sautéing the onions or scallions in olive oil, then adding the spinach and cooking until wilted. The mixture is then removed from the heat and combined with the feta cheese and egg. This filling is then layered or wrapped in the phyllo pastry, which has been brushed with butter or olive oil, and baked until golden.
