Salad Dressing

Salad dressing (/ˈsæləd ˈdrɛsɪŋ/) is a type of sauce used to enhance the flavor and texture of salad, a dish consisting of a mixture of small pieces of food, usually vegetables or fruits.

Etymology

The term "salad dressing" has been used in English since the 14th century. It comes from the Old French word "sauce," which means "a relish to make our food more enjoyable." The word "dressing" is derived from the verb "to dress," and it refers to the act of preparing or enhancing food before consumption.

Types of Salad Dressing

There are many types of salad dressings, including but not limited to:

  • Vinaigrette: A mixture of oil and vinegar, often flavored with herbs, spices, and other ingredients.
  • Ranch dressing: A type of salad dressing made of some combination of buttermilk, salt, garlic, onion, mustard, herbs, and spices, mixed into a sauce based on mayonnaise or another oil emulsion.
  • Caesar dressing: A dressing that includes ingredients such as lemon juice, olive oil, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, and black pepper.
  • Thousand Island dressing: A salad dressing and condiment based on mayonnaise and can include olive oil, lemon juice, orange juice, paprika, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, vinegar, cream, chili sauce, tomato purée, ketchup, or Tabasco sauce.

Health Considerations

While salad dressings can enhance the taste of vegetables, they can also add significant amounts of fat and calories. Some dressings, particularly store-bought bottled dressings, also contain large amounts of sodium and sugar. Healthier options include dressings made from olive oil or canola oil, which contain heart-healthy monounsaturated fats.
