Oligozoospermia

Oligozoospermia (pronounced: oh-lig-oh-zoh-uh-sper-mee-uh) is a medical condition characterized by a low sperm count in men. It is one of the leading causes of male infertility.

Etymology

The term "Oligozoospermia" is derived from the Greek words "oligos" meaning "few", "zoo" meaning "animal", and "spermia" meaning "seed".

Definition

Oligozoospermia is defined as having fewer than 15 million sperm per milliliter of semen. It is a type of male factor infertility that can make it difficult for a man to father a child.

Causes

The causes of oligozoospermia can be divided into three main categories: pre-testicular, testicular, and post-testicular.

  • Pre-testicular causes include hormonal imbalances and general health issues such as obesity and smoking.
  • Testicular causes involve conditions that directly affect the testes, such as varicocele, infections, and genetic disorders.
  • Post-testicular causes are related to problems with the transport of sperm, such as ejaculatory duct obstruction and retrograde ejaculation.

Treatment

Treatment for oligozoospermia depends on the underlying cause. It may involve lifestyle changes, medication, surgery, or assisted reproductive technologies such as In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) or Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).

Related Terms

  • Azoospermia: A condition where a man has no measurable level of sperm in his semen.
  • Asthenozoospermia: A condition characterized by the decreased motility of sperm.
  • Teratozoospermia: A condition characterized by a high percentage of abnormal sperm.
