Moorfields Eye Hospital (pronunciation: /ˈmʊərfiːldz aɪ ˈhɒspɪtəl/) is a specialist NHS hospital for eye health, including treatment, research and education. Located in London, it is one of the oldest and largest centres for ophthalmic treatment, teaching and research in the world.

Etymology

The hospital was founded on 25 March 1805, and was originally located at Moorfields, a park in London. The name "Moorfields" is derived from the Old English "mōr" meaning "marsh" and "feld" meaning "field", referring to the marshy area that the park was built on.

History

Moorfields Eye Hospital was founded by John Cunningham Saunders and George James Guthrie. It was the first hospital in the world dedicated to the treatment of diseases of the eyes. In 1821, the hospital moved to its current location on City Road.
