Identify (/aɪˈdɛntɪfaɪ/), from the Latin identificare meaning "to make to resemble," is a term used in various fields of medicine. It generally refers to the process of establishing the nature of a disease or condition, or the distinguishing characteristics of a patient's presenting symptoms.

In Psychiatry

In psychiatry, to identify is to recognize and name the mental illness a patient is suffering from, based on the symptoms presented. This is often done using diagnostic tools such as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) or the International Classification of Diseases (ICD).

In Pathology
