Guntur District (pronunciation: /ɡʊnˈtʊər/), is a district in the Andhra Pradesh state of India.
Etymology
The name 'Guntur' is believed to have been derived from the Sanskrit words 'Garthapuri', meaning a water pond.
Description
Guntur District is located in the eastern part of Andhra Pradesh. It is one of the nine districts in the Coastal Andhra region of the state. The district is bordered by Krishna District to the west, Prakasam District to the south, the Bay of Bengal to the east, and a portion of Nalgonda District and Telangana to the north.
Administrative Divisions
The district is divided into four revenue divisions, namely Guntur, Tenali, Narasaraopet, and Gurazala. These are further divided into 57 mandals in the Guntur district.
Economy
The economy of Guntur District is primarily agrarian, with agriculture and fishing being the major occupations. The district is known for its export of chillies, cotton, and tobacco.
Language
The official language of Guntur District is Telugu.
