Emotional abuse

Emotional abuse (pronunciation: /ɪˈmoʊʃənəl əˈbyo͞os/), also known as psychological abuse, is a form of abuse characterized by a person subjecting or exposing another to behavior that may result in psychological trauma, including anxiety, chronic depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder.

Etymology

The term "emotional abuse" is derived from the words "emotion" and "abuse". "Emotion" comes from the Latin emotio, meaning "a moving out", and "abuse" comes from the Latin abusus, meaning "misused or used wrongly".

Definition

Emotional abuse is defined as any act including confinement, isolation, verbal assault, humiliation, intimidation, infantilization, or any other treatment which may diminish the sense of identity, dignity, and self-worth.

Types of Emotional Abuse

There are several types of emotional abuse, including but not limited to:

  • Verbal abuse: This involves the use of words to hurt or belittle another person.
  • Gaslighting: This is a form of manipulation that seeks to sow seeds of doubt in a targeted individual or in members of a targeted group, making them question their own memory, perception, and sanity.
  • Isolation: This involves cutting the victim off from friends, family, and other support systems.
