Data Entry (pronunciation: /ˈdeɪtə ˈɛntri/) is a process in which data is input into a computer system by an individual typing on a keyboard, scanning barcodes, voice recognition, or other data input devices. The data entry operator may be required to verify or edit data as it is entered, or another individual might do this work. The data may then be used for a variety of purposes, such as analysis, reports, or record keeping.

Etymology

The term "Data Entry" is derived from the English words "data", meaning facts or statistics collected together for reference or analysis, and "entry", meaning an act of going or coming in. The term has been in use since the advent of computer systems and refers to the act of entering data into these systems.
