Crunch (exercise)

The Crunch is a popular exercise primarily targeting the abdominal muscles. It is similar to, but distinct from, the sit-up.

Pronunciation

  • /krʌntʃ/

Etymology

The term "crunch" is derived from the English word "crunch", which is an onomatopoeic word that mimics the sound of something being crushed or crumbled. In the context of exercise, it refers to the action of contracting the abdominal muscles in a forceful manner.

Description

The crunch is performed while lying face up on the floor with knees bent, by curling the shoulders towards the pelvis. This short range of motion primarily works the rectus abdominis muscle and also works the obliques.

Variations

There are many variations of the crunch, including the reverse crunch, the twist crunch, and the cable crunch. Each variation targets a slightly different set of muscles, or the same muscles in slightly different ways.
