Strength Training

Strength training (/strɛŋkθ treɪnɪŋ/) is a type of physical exercise specializing in the use of resistance to induce muscular contraction, which builds the strength, anaerobic endurance, size of skeletal muscles and bone density.

Etymology

The term "strength training" is derived from the English words "strength" meaning the quality or state of being physically strong, and "training" meaning the action of teaching a person a particular skill or type of behavior.

Definition

Strength training involves exercises that use resistance to contract muscles in order to increase strength, boost anaerobic endurance, and build skeletal muscles. This can be achieved through various methods such as weightlifting, resistance band exercises, and bodyweight exercises.

Related Terms

  • Weightlifting: A sport or activity of lifting barbells or other heavy weights. It is one of the most common forms of strength training.

  • Anaerobic exercise: A physical exercise intense enough to cause lactate to form. It is used by athletes in non-endurance sports to promote strength, speed and power and by body builders to build muscle mass.
