Cisgender (pronounced /sɪsˈdʒɛndər/) is a term used in the field of Gender Studies to describe individuals whose gender identity matches the sex they were assigned at birth.

Etymology

The term 'cisgender' has its roots in the Latin prefix 'cis-', meaning 'on this side of', which is the opposite of 'trans-', meaning 'across from' or 'on the other side of'. The term was coined to differentiate from Transgender individuals, whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth.
