Bibimbap (pronunciation: /biːbɪmbæp/; Korean: 비빔밥) is a traditional Korean dish. The term "Bibimbap" literally translates to "mixed rice" in English.

Etymology

The word Bibimbap is derived from the Korean word "bibim" which means "mixing" and "bap" which means "rice".

Description

Bibimbap is a popular dish in Korea that consists of a bowl of warm white rice, topped with namul (sautéed and seasoned vegetables), gochujang (chili pepper paste), soy sauce, or doenjang (a fermented soybean paste). A raw or fried egg and sliced meat (usually beef) are common additions. The ingredients are stirred together thoroughly just before eating. It can be served either cold or hot.

In South Korea, Jeonju, Jinju, and Tongyeong are especially famous for their versions of bibimbap. In 2011, it was listed at number 40 on the World's 50 most delicious foods readers' poll compiled by CNN Travel.

Variations

There are many variations of bibimbap, including dolsot bibimbap (served in a hot stone pot), hoe-deopbap (a variation with raw fish), yukhoe bibimbap (a variation with raw beef), and vegan bibimbap.
