Bell Labs

Bell Labs (pronounced: /bɛl læbz/), also known as Bell Laboratories and formerly known as AT&T Bell Laboratories and Bell Telephone Laboratories, is an American industrial research and scientific development company. It is owned by Finnish company Nokia.

Etymology

The name "Bell Labs" is derived from its original founder, Alexander Graham Bell, an eminent scientist and inventor who is most famous for inventing the telephone. The "Labs" part of the name refers to the company's focus on research and development in various scientific and technological fields.

History

Bell Labs was established in 1925 by the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) and Western Electric, AT&T's manufacturing subsidiary. It was named after Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone. The company has made significant contributions to the development of telecommunications and technology, including the invention of the transistor, the laser, and the operating system Unix.
