The American University of Beirut (AUB) is a private, non-sectarian, and independent university in Beirut, Lebanon. It is one of the most prestigious universities in the Middle East.

Etymology

The American University of Beirut was named for its founding by American missionaries in 1866. The word "Beirut" is derived from the Canaanite-Phoenician be'erot ("wells"), referring to the underground water table that is still tapped by the local inhabitants for general use.
