Higher Education

Higher education (pronunciation: /ˈhaɪər ɛdʒʊˈkeɪʃən/) is a level of education that follows the completion of a school providing a secondary education, such as a high school, secondary school, or gymnasium. Tertiary education includes both undergraduate and postgraduate education, as well as vocational education and training. Colleges, universities, institutes of technology and polytechnic schools are all examples of institutions that provide higher education.

Etymology

The term "higher education" is derived from the fact that it is traditionally the final stage of formal learning, usually required for professional roles in society. The term was first used in the early 19th century.
