Albanian (pronunciation: /ælˈbeɪniən/; shqip or gjuha shqipe) is an Indo-European language spoken by the Albanians in the Balkans and the Albanian diaspora in the Americas, Europe and Oceania.

Etymology

The term Albanian is derived from the ancient Illyrian tribe of the Albanoi, mentioned by the Roman historian Ptolemy in his work Geographia. The term shqip or gjuha shqipe translates to "the Albanian language", and it is thought to be related to the word shqipe, which means "eagle" in Albanian, representing the symbol of Albania.
