ZooAmerica

ZooAmerica is a North American wildlife park located in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The zoo is situated on 11 acres and is home to over 200 animals representing more than 75 species from five regions of North America. It is part of the Hershey Entertainment and Resorts Company.

History

ZooAmerica was founded in 1910 by Milton S. Hershey, the founder of the Hershey Chocolate Company. Originally, the zoo was a small collection of animals located in Hersheypark. In 1978, the zoo was expanded and rebranded as ZooAmerica, focusing exclusively on North American wildlife.

Exhibits

ZooAmerica is divided into five themed regions, each representing a different North American habitat:

• Southern Swamps - This exhibit features animals from the southeastern United States, including alligators, bobcats, and river otters.
• The Great Southwest - This area showcases species from the arid regions of the southwestern United States, such as javelinas, roadrunners, and coatis.
• Eastern Woodlands - This section includes animals native to the forests of the eastern United States, including black bears, white-tailed deer, and porcupines.
• Big Sky Country - Representing the plains and mountainous regions, this exhibit features animals like prairie dogs, bison, and mountain lions.
• Northlands - This area focuses on species from the northern parts of North America, including lynx, wolves, and bald eagles.

Conservation and Education

ZooAmerica is committed to wildlife conservation and environmental education. The zoo participates in various Species Survival Plan (SSP) programs and offers educational programs for schools and the general public. These programs aim to raise awareness about the importance of preserving North American wildlife and their habitats.

Visitor Information

ZooAmerica is open year-round, with varying hours depending on the season. The zoo offers guided tours, animal encounters, and special events throughout the year. It is accessible from Hersheypark, and a combination ticket for both attractions is available.
