Ukrainian politician

Yuriy Vitaliyovych Lutsenko (born 14 December 1964) is a Ukrainian politician who has held several significant positions in the government of Ukraine. He served as the Prosecutor General of Ukraine from 12 May 2016 to 29 August 2019. Prior to this, he was the Minister of Internal Affairs from 2005 to 2006 and again from 2007 to 2010.

Early life and education

Lutsenko was born in Rivne, in the Ukrainian SSR of the Soviet Union. He graduated from Lviv Polytechnic with a degree in engineering.

Political career

Lutsenko's political career began in the early 2000s. He was a prominent figure in the Orange Revolution and became a close ally of Yulia Tymoshenko.

Minister of Internal Affairs

Lutsenko was appointed as the Minister of Internal Affairs in February 2005 under Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. He served in this role until December 2006 and was reappointed in December 2007, serving until January 2010. During his tenure, he focused on reforming the police force and combating corruption.

Prosecutor General of Ukraine

In May 2016, Lutsenko was appointed as the Prosecutor General of Ukraine by President Petro Poroshenko. His appointment was controversial because he did not have a legal background, which is typically required for the position. However, he was granted an exception by the Verkhovna Rada. As Prosecutor General, Lutsenko was involved in several high-profile cases and anti-corruption efforts. He served until August 2019, when he was succeeded by Ruslan Riaboshapka.

Personal life

Lutsenko is married to Iryna Lutsenko, who is also a politician. They have two children.
