Yonsei University
Yonsei University is a private research university located in Seoul, South Korea. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the country, forming the SKY universities alongside Seoul National University and Korea University. Yonsei University was established in 1885 as Yonhi College, making it one of the first modern institutions of higher education in Korea. The university's name, Yonsei, was adopted in 1957, following the merger of Yonhi College and Severance Union Medical College, symbolizing the integration of the humanities and sciences.
History[edit]
Yonsei University's origins can be traced back to 1885, with the founding of Gwanghyewon, a small hospital which later evolved into Severance Hospital. The hospital was established by Horace Newton Allen, a medical missionary sent by the United States. The establishment of Yonhi College followed, focusing on providing education in the liberal arts. The merger of Yonhi College and Severance Union Medical College in 1957 marked the birth of Yonsei University as it is known today, embodying a comprehensive institution that spans a wide range of academic disciplines, including a significant focus on medical education.
Campuses[edit]
Yonsei University's main campus, Sinchon, is situated in the heart of Seoul, offering students a vibrant urban environment alongside its academic facilities. The campus is renowned for its beautiful architecture and green spaces, providing a conducive environment for study and research. Additionally, Yonsei operates an international campus in Songdo, Incheon, known for its state-of-the-art facilities and global education programs.
Academic Programs[edit]
Yonsei University offers a wide array of undergraduate and graduate programs across various fields of study. The university is particularly noted for its College of Medicine, College of Dentistry, and College of Nursing, which are among the top medical schools in Korea. Yonsei's medical programs are highly competitive, attracting top students from across the nation and internationally.
The university also emphasizes interdisciplinary studies, encouraging students to pursue a broad education that spans multiple disciplines. This approach is facilitated by the Underwood International College (UIC), Yonsei's liberal arts college, which offers courses taught entirely in English.
Research and Innovation[edit]
Yonsei University is a leading research institution in Korea, contributing significantly to advancements in science, technology, and the humanities. The university is home to numerous research centers and institutes, fostering collaboration across various disciplines. Yonsei's commitment to innovation is evident in its active participation in research projects, both domestically and internationally, and its strong ties with industry partners.

Student life at Yonsei University is vibrant and diverse, with numerous clubs, organizations, and events that cater to a wide range of interests. The university's location in Seoul provides students with access to a bustling metropolis rich in culture, history, and entertainment.
