Yazid Sufaat

Yazid Sufaat (pronounced: ya-zid soo-faat) is a Malaysian biochemist known for his involvement in Al-Qaeda's biological weapons program.

Etymology

The name Yazid is of Arabic origin and means "increasing" or "growing". Sufaat is a common surname in Malaysia, but its etymology is not well-documented.

Biography

Yazid Sufaat was born in Johor, Malaysia. He studied biochemistry at California State University, Sacramento, before returning to Malaysia to start a successful business. In the late 1990s, he became involved with Jemaah Islamiyah, a Southeast Asian militant extremist group with links to Al-Qaeda.

In 2001, Sufaat was arrested and imprisoned for seven years for his involvement in Al-Qaeda's biological weapons program. He was released in 2008 but was arrested again in 2013 for recruiting members for ISIS.
