Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania

Wyndmoor is a census-designated place (CDP) in Springfield Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. It is a suburb of the city of Philadelphia, and is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

History

Wyndmoor has a rich history dating back to the 19th century. It was originally part of Springfield Township, which was founded in 1681 by William Penn. The name "Wyndmoor" was coined in the late 19th century when the Pennsylvania Railroad opened a train station in the area, which was named "Wyndmoor" because of its location on a high, windy moor.

Geography

Wyndmoor is located at 40°4′58″N 75°12′5″W (40.082778, -75.201389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.6 square miles (4.1 km2), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 5,498 people, 2,312 households, and 1,462 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,436.3 people per square mile (1,327.2/km²).

Education

Wyndmoor is served by the Springfield Township School District. The district operates Springfield Township High School, Springfield Township Middle School, and Erdenheim Elementary School.

Notable people

Several notable people have lived in Wyndmoor, including Reggie Jackson, a former professional baseball player, and John Salmons, a former professional basketball player.
