World Veterinary Association

History

The World Veterinary Association (WVA) was established in 1863, making it one of the oldest international veterinary organizations. It was founded to promote animal health and welfare, as well as to support the veterinary profession globally. Over the years, the WVA has played a significant role in advancing veterinary science and education.

Mission and Objectives

The mission of the World Veterinary Association is to ensure and promote animal health and welfare and public health globally, through the development and advancement of veterinary medicine. The WVA aims to:

• Promote animal health and welfare.
• Support the veterinary profession.
• Encourage the exchange of scientific knowledge and expertise.
• Advocate for the role of veterinarians in society.

Structure

The WVA is composed of member associations from around the world. These associations represent veterinarians from various countries and regions. The WVA is governed by an Executive Committee, which is elected by the General Assembly. The General Assembly is the supreme decision-making body of the WVA and consists of representatives from all member associations.

Activities

The World Veterinary Association engages in a variety of activities to fulfill its mission, including:

• Organizing the World Veterinary Congress, a major event that brings together veterinarians from around the world to discuss current issues and advancements in veterinary medicine.
• Publishing guidelines and position statements on important topics related to animal health and welfare.
• Collaborating with other international organizations, such as the World Health Organization and the Food and Agriculture Organization, to address global health challenges.

World Veterinary Day

The WVA, in collaboration with the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), celebrates World Veterinary Day annually on the last Saturday of April. This day is dedicated to highlighting the contributions of veterinarians to society and raising awareness about the importance of animal health and welfare.

Membership

Membership in the World Veterinary Association is open to national veterinary associations, regional veterinary organizations, and international veterinary groups. Members benefit from access to a global network of veterinary professionals and resources.
