World Pie Eating Championship
World Pie Eating Championship is an annual competition that takes place in Wigan, United Kingdom. The event, which has been held since 1992, attracts competitors from around the world who aim to consume a standard meat pie in the fastest time possible.
History
The World Pie Eating Championship was first held in 1992 in Wigan, a town in the North West England known for its love of pies. The competition was initially a long-distance event, with competitors required to eat as many pies as possible within a given time. However, in 2006, the rules were changed to a speed-eating contest, with the winner being the person who could eat a single pie the fastest.
Competition Rules
The competition rules have evolved over the years. Currently, the pies used in the competition must weigh 230 grams, with a tolerance of 15 grams. The pie must be a traditional meat and potato pie, encased in a pastry crust. The pie must be eaten without the use of hands, and competitors are disqualified if they regurgitate within one hour of the competition.
Notable Winners
Several competitors have gained notoriety for their performances in the World Pie Eating Championship. In 2007, Adrian Frost set a new world record by eating a pie in 43.53 seconds. In 2016, Martin Appleton-Clare became the first person to win the competition three times.
