Windows Live Toolbar was a browser extension toolbar for Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox developed by Microsoft as part of its Windows Live services. The toolbar provided users with quick access to various Windows Live services and features, including Windows Live Search, Windows Live Hotmail, and Windows Live Favorites.

Features[edit]

Windows Live Toolbar offered several features designed to enhance the browsing experience:

  • Search Box: Integrated search box powered by Windows Live Search, allowing users to perform web searches directly from the toolbar.
  • Pop-up Blocker: A built-in pop-up blocker to prevent unwanted pop-up windows.
  • Form Fill: A feature to automatically fill out web forms with user information.
  • Highlight Viewer: Highlighting search terms on web pages.
  • Windows Live Favorites: Integration with Windows Live Favorites, enabling users to save and access their favorite websites from any computer.
  • Custom Buttons: Users could add custom buttons to the toolbar for quick access to their favorite websites and services.

History[edit]

Windows Live Toolbar was first released in 2005 as part of the Windows Live suite of services. It was designed to replace the older MSN Toolbar and provide a more integrated experience with other Windows Live services. The toolbar underwent several updates and improvements over the years.

In 2011, Microsoft announced that Windows Live Toolbar would be discontinued and replaced by the Bing Bar, which offered similar features and integration with Bing services.

Discontinuation[edit]

The discontinuation of Windows Live Toolbar was part of Microsoft's broader strategy to streamline its services and focus on the Bing brand. Users were encouraged to transition to the Bing Bar for continued support and new features.
