William Worrall Mayo

William Worrall Mayo (pronounced: /ˈweɪ.joʊ/; May 31, 1819 – March 6, 1911) was a notable English-born American medical doctor. He is best known as the father of the Mayo brothers, who along with their father, founded the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Etymology

The name 'William' is of old Germanic origin, derived from 'wil', meaning 'desire' and 'helm', meaning 'helmet, protection'. 'Worrall' is a surname of English origin, likely derived from a place name. 'Mayo' is a common surname of Irish origin, derived from the Irish 'O'Maigh Eo', meaning 'descendant of Maigh Eo'.

Early Life and Education

William Worrall Mayo was born in Salford, Lancashire, England. He emigrated to the United States in 1845 and settled in Lafayette, Indiana, where he worked as a tailor before deciding to pursue a career in medicine. He studied medicine at Indiana Medical College and later at the University of Missouri.

Career

In 1863, Mayo moved to Rochester, Minnesota, where he served as an examining surgeon for the Union Army during the American Civil War. After the war, he opened a private medical practice and was later joined by his sons, William James Mayo and Charles Horace Mayo. Together, they founded the Mayo Clinic, one of the premier medical institutions in the world.

Legacy

The Mayo Clinic, founded by William Worrall Mayo and his sons, continues to be a leading institution in medical research and treatment. The Mayo Medical School and Mayo Graduate School were also established as part of the Mayo Clinic's commitment to education and research.
