Wawa, Pennsylvania
Wawa, Pennsylvania is a small, unincorporated community located in Delaware County, in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area and is known for its rich history and as the namesake of the Wawa convenience store chain, one of the largest convenience store retailers in the Greater Philadelphia area.
History
The area now known as Wawa was originally inhabited by the Leni Lenape Native Americans. European settlers arrived in the 17th century, and the community eventually got its name from the Ojibwe word for the Canada goose (taken from the cry of the bird itself). Wawa's history is closely tied to the development of dairy farming in the region and the establishment of the Wawa Dairy Farm in the early 20th century. This farm would later evolve into the Wawa convenience store chain, which opened its first store in 1964.
