Waukesha County, Wisconsin


Waukesha County, Wisconsin is a county located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 406,978, making it the third-most populous county in Wisconsin. The county seat is Waukesha. The county was created in 1846 from portions of Milwaukee County.
Geography[edit]
Waukesha County is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 581 square miles (1,505 km²), of which 556 square miles (1,440 km²) is land and 25 square miles (65 km²) (4.3%) is water. The county is known for its numerous lakes, rivers, and streams, including the Pewaukee Lake and the Fox River.
Demographics[edit]
As of the 2020 census, there were 406,978 people, 158,846 households, and 113,091 families residing in the county. The population density was 732 people per square mile (283/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 89.4% White, 2.5% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 3.6% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.8% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.4% of the population.

Waukesha County has a diverse economy with a mix of manufacturing, healthcare, retail, and professional services. Major employers in the county include GE Healthcare, ProHealth Care, and Quad/Graphics. The county is also home to several large shopping centers, including Brookfield Square.
Education[edit]
Waukesha County is served by several school districts, including the Waukesha School District, Elmbrook School District, and Mukwonago Area School District. Higher education institutions in the county include Carroll University and the University of Wisconsin–Waukesha.
Transportation[edit]
The county is served by several major highways, including Interstate 94, Interstate 43, and U.S. Route 18. Public transportation is provided by the Waukesha Metro Transit system, which operates bus routes throughout the county.
