Washtenaw County, Michigan is a county located in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 367,601, making it the sixth-most populous county in Michigan. The county seat is Ann Arbor, which is also the county's largest city and the principal city of the Ann Arbor Metropolitan Statistical Area. Washtenaw County is part of the Detroit-Warren-Ann Arbor, MI Combined Statistical Area. It is home to the University of Michigan, which significantly influences the economy and culture of the county.
History
Washtenaw County was organized in 1826, carved out of a portion of Oakland County. Its name is derived from a Native American language that was spoken in the area, with various interpretations of the name related to "far away waters" or "river of the country." Throughout the 19th century, the county developed as an agricultural hub, with Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti emerging as significant towns, the latter being a major center for the automotive industry in the early 20th century.
