Warts
Warts
Warts (/wɔːrts/), also known as verrucae (/vəˈruːkiː/), are small, fleshy bumps on the skin or mucous membranes caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). The term "wart" is derived from the Old English wearte, akin to the Old High German warza and the Old Norse varta, all meaning "wart".
Types of Warts
There are several types of warts, each with a distinct appearance. They include:
- Common warts (Verruca vulgaris): These are often found on hands and knees. They have a rough, grainy appearance and a rounded top.
- Plantar warts (Verruca plantaris): These grow on the soles of the feet. Unlike other warts, plantar warts grow into your skin, not out of it.
- Flat warts (Verruca plana): These are smaller and smoother than other warts. They tend to grow in large numbers and can occur anywhere, but children usually get them on the face.
- Filiform warts (Verruca filiformis): These are long, narrow warts that are usually found on the eyelids, face, neck, or lips.
- Periungual warts: These occur under and around the fingernails and toenails.
Causes
Warts are caused by various strains of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). The virus causes an excess amount of keratin, a hard protein, to develop in the top skin layer (epidermis). The extra keratin produces the rough, hard texture of a wart.
Treatment
Treatment for warts varies depending on the type of wart and its location. Some common treatments include salicylic acid, cryotherapy, and laser therapy. In some cases, warts may disappear without treatment.
Prevention
Prevention of warts includes avoiding direct contact with warts, not picking at warts, and keeping skin healthy and moisturized to prevent cracks where HPV can enter.
