Wapping
Wapping is a district located in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, forming part of the East End of London. It is situated on the north bank of the River Thames, and its proximity to the river has shaped its history and development. Historically, Wapping was part of the Port of London, one of the busiest and most important ports in the world.
History
The area's history is deeply intertwined with the maritime industry. During the Elizabethan era, Wapping was a sparsely populated marshland, but it began to develop rapidly in the 17th century due to the expansion of the London Docks. The construction of the Wapping Dock and other docks attracted workers and industries to the area, transforming it into a bustling maritime hub. Wapping was also known for its notorious pirates and was the site of Execution Dock, where pirates were hanged.
In the 19th century, Wapping's character continued to evolve with the construction of the London Docks, which became some of the most extensive docks in the world. However, the area also became infamous for its slums and the harsh living conditions of its residents, many of whom were dockworkers and sailors.
The 20th century saw significant changes in Wapping, especially after the Second World War, when much of the area was damaged by bombing. The decline of the Port of London in the latter half of the 20th century led to the closure of many of Wapping's docks and warehouses. In recent decades, the area has undergone extensive regeneration, transforming into a residential and cultural quarter while retaining its historic character.
Geography
Wapping is defined by its location along the River Thames. It is bordered by the Tower Bridge to the west and extends eastwards towards the Limehouse area. To the north, it is bounded by The Highway, a major road that separates it from the rest of the East End.
