Vitellaria

Vitellaria (pronunciation: vih-tell-are-ee-uh) is a genus of flowering plants in the family Sapotaceae, native to Africa. It is most commonly known for the species Vitellaria paradoxa, or the Shea Tree, which produces Shea Butter, a substance widely used in cosmetics and cooking.

Etymology

The term "Vitellaria" is derived from the Latin word "vitellus" meaning "yolk", in reference to the yolk-like substance found in the fruit of the plant.

Species

The genus Vitellaria contains two species:

  • Vitellaria paradoxa - Also known as the Shea Tree, it is the most well-known species in the genus. It is native to Africa and is known for its fruit, which is used to produce Shea Butter.
  • Vitellaria nilotica - A less common species, it is also native to Africa and is similar to Vitellaria paradoxa in many ways.
