Vevey
Vevey is a town in Switzerland, located in the Canton of Vaud, on the north shore of Lake Geneva, near Lausanne. It was the seat of the district of the same name until 2006, and is now part of the Riviera-Pays-d'Enhaut district. Vevey is home to the world headquarters of the international food and beverage company Nestlé, founded here in 1867.
History
Vevey is one of the “Pearls of the Swiss Riviera”. Its history stretches back over several thousand years, and the town has been inhabited since the Neolithic times. The town grew substantially during the Roman Empire due to its strategic location.
Geography
Vevey is located on Lake Geneva, which is shared by several other Swiss cities and towns, including Geneva, Lausanne, and Montreux. The town is surrounded by vineyards and is under the high cliffs of Mount Pelerin.
Economy
Vevey is known for being the international headquarters of the food giant, Nestlé. The company was founded in this town by Henri Nestlé in 1867. The Nestlé headquarters still dominate the Vevey skyline today.
Culture
Vevey is also known for its cultural vibrancy. The town hosts the 'Fête de la Vigne' every year, which is a three-week long festival celebrating the town's rich wine-making tradition. The town is also home to the Alimentarium, the first museum in the world devoted to food and nutrition.
Notable people
Several notable people have lived in Vevey, including the comedian Charlie Chaplin, who spent the last 25 years of his life in the town. There is a statue of Chaplin near the lake shore.
