Valentine McGillycuddy
Valentine Trant McGillycuddy (February 14, 1849 – April 6, 1939) was an American surgeon, pioneer, and Indian agent, best known for his work in the western frontier, where he was appointed as the US Indian Agent of the Oglala Sioux tribe.

The name Valentine is of Latin origin, derived from the word 'valens' meaning 'healthy, strong'. McGillycuddy is an Irish surname, derived from the Gaelic Mac Giolla Chuda, which means 'son of the servant of (Saint) Cuda'.
Biography
Valentine McGillycuddy was born on February 14, 1849, in Racine, Wisconsin. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in medicine. He served as a topographer in several expeditions in the West and was the first white man to climb Harney Peak, the highest point in South Dakota.
In 1874, he was appointed as the surgeon for the Black Hills Expedition, led by General George Armstrong Custer. He later served as the US Indian Agent for the Oglala Sioux tribe from 1879 to 1886. During his tenure, he worked to improve the living conditions of the tribe and advocated for their rights.
