VK2809

VK2809 is an experimental drug currently under development by Viking Therapeutics for the treatment of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and hypercholesterolemia. It is a novel, orally available selective thyroid hormone receptor beta (TRβ) agonist that possesses lipid-lowering and anti-inflammatory effects.
Mechanism of Action[edit]
VK2809 works by selectively targeting and activating the thyroid hormone receptor beta (TRβ) in the liver. This activation leads to the breakdown of lipids and reduction of lipoprotein secretion, thereby lowering cholesterol levels in the blood. Additionally, the drug's anti-inflammatory properties help to reduce liver inflammation and fibrosis, common symptoms of NASH.
Clinical Trials[edit]
VK2809 has undergone several clinical trials to evaluate its safety and efficacy. In a Phase 2 trial, the drug demonstrated significant reductions in liver fat content, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and liver enzyme levels in patients with NASH and hypercholesterolemia. Further trials are ongoing to confirm these results and to further investigate the drug's potential benefits in treating these conditions.
Potential Applications[edit]
While the primary focus of VK2809 development is for the treatment of NASH and hypercholesterolemia, its mechanism of action suggests potential applications in other conditions characterized by high cholesterol levels or chronic liver inflammation. These could include atherosclerosis, metabolic syndrome, and certain types of liver disease.
