The DOP covers an area of approximately 40,000 hectares and includes nine municipalities, with the towns of Utiel and Requena being the most prominent.

Geography and Climate

Utiel-Requena is situated on a high plateau with an average altitude of 700 meters above sea level. The region is characterized by its continental climate, which features hot summers and cold winters. The annual rainfall is relatively low, averaging around 450 mm, which is conducive to the cultivation of high-quality grapes. The soil in the area is predominantly limestone and clay, providing excellent drainage and contributing to the unique terroir of the wines produced here.

Grape Varieties

The most important grape variety in Utiel-Requena is the Bobal grape, which accounts for over 75% of the vineyard area. Bobal is known for its thick skin and high resistance to drought, making it well-suited to the region's climate. The wines produced from Bobal are typically deep in color, with high acidity and moderate alcohol content.

Other grape varieties grown in the region include Tempranillo, Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot for red wines, and Macabeo, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc for white wines.

The winemaking tradition in Utiel-Requena is deeply rooted in the local culture, with many family-owned wineries operating for generations. The region produces a wide range of wines, including young reds, aged reds, rosés, and whites. The aging process for red wines in Utiel-Requena typically involves the use of oak barrels, which impart additional complexity and structure to the wines. The region also produces sparkling wines and dessert wines, showcasing the versatility of its grape varieties.

Cultural Significance

Viticulture has played a significant role in the cultural and economic development of Utiel-Requena. The region hosts several wine festivals throughout the year, celebrating its rich winemaking heritage. The most notable of these is the "Fiesta de la Vendimia" (Harvest Festival), which takes place in September and includes parades, tastings, and traditional music and dance.
