History

The University of Sheffield was formed by the merger of three institutions: the Sheffield Medical School, Firth College, and the Sheffield Technical School.

Firth College

Early Foundations

The Sheffield Medical School was founded in 1828, making it one of the oldest medical schools in the UK. Firth College, established in 1879, was named after its benefactor, Mark Firth, a local steel manufacturer. The Sheffield Technical School was founded in 1884 to support the city's burgeoning steel industry.

Formation of the University

In 1897, these three institutions were merged to form the University College of Sheffield. In 1905, the college received its royal charter and became the University of Sheffield.
