University of Santo Tomas

The University of Santo Tomas (UST), located in Manila, Philippines, is a private, Roman Catholic research university. Founded on April 28, 1611, by Miguel de Benavides, the university is the oldest existing university in Asia and holds the distinction of being the largest Catholic university in the world in a single campus.
History[edit]
Founding and Early Years[edit]
The University of Santo Tomas was established by the third Archbishop of Manila, Miguel de Benavides, O.P., who donated his personal library and a modest amount of money to form a seminary-college. The institution was originally intended to prepare young men for the priesthood. It was officially founded on April 28, 1611, and was initially named the "Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Santísimo Rosario."
Royal and Pontifical University[edit]
In 1645, the college was elevated to a university by Pope Innocent X, and in 1680, it was granted the title "Royal" by King Charles II of Spain. The university was later declared a "Pontifical University" by Pope Leo XIII in 1902, further solidifying its status as a leading institution of higher learning.

World War II and the Internment Camp[edit]
During World War II, the university's campus was used as an internment camp by the Japanese forces. Thousands of civilians, mostly Americans and other allied nationals, were detained in the campus grounds. The camp was liberated by American forces in February 1945.

Post-War Developments[edit]
After the war, the university underwent significant reconstruction and expansion. It continued to grow in both size and academic offerings, establishing itself as a premier institution for higher education in the Philippines.
Campus[edit]
The main campus of the University of Santo Tomas is located in Sampaloc, Manila. It covers an area of 21.5 hectares and features a blend of historic and modern architecture. The campus is home to several notable structures, including the Main Building, which is an architectural and historical landmark.

Academics[edit]
UST offers a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate programs across various fields of study. The university is organized into several faculties, colleges, and institutes, each specializing in different academic disciplines.
Notable Alumni[edit]
The University of Santo Tomas has produced numerous notable alumni who have made significant contributions in various fields, including politics, arts, sciences, and religion. Some of its distinguished alumni include José Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines, and several former presidents of the country.
