The University of Memphis (UofM, U of M) is a public university in Memphis, Tennessee. Founded in 1912, the university has an enrollment of more than 21,000 students. The university is a major research institution and is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity".

History[edit]

The University of Memphis was established in 1912 as the West Tennessee State Normal School. It underwent several name changes, becoming West Tennessee State Teachers College in 1925, Memphis State College in 1941, and Memphis State University in 1957. In 1994, it was renamed the University of Memphis.

Campus[edit]

The main campus is located in the East Memphis neighborhood of Memphis. The university also operates several satellite campuses, including the Lambuth Campus in Jackson and the Collierville Center.
