The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) was a state-run health sciences institution in New Jersey, United States. It was the largest school of health sciences of its kind in the country before it was dissolved in 2013.

History

UMDNJ was established in 1970 as the College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. It was created to address the need for more medical professionals in the state. Over the years, it expanded to include multiple schools and programs, becoming a major center for medical education and research.

In 1981, the institution was renamed the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. It operated several campuses across the state, including in Newark, Piscataway, and Stratford.

Merger and Dissolution

In 2012, the New Jersey Legislature passed a law to reorganize the state's higher education system. As a result, on July 1, 2013, most of UMDNJ's schools and programs were merged into Rutgers University, forming the Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences division. The School of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford became part of Rowan University.

Campuses and Facilities

UMDNJ had several campuses throughout New Jersey, each housing different schools and research facilities. The main campus in Newark was home to the New Jersey Medical School and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. The Piscataway campus hosted the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and the School of Public Health.

The university also operated the University Hospital in Newark, which served as a teaching hospital and provided healthcare services to the community.

Research and Contributions

UMDNJ was known for its contributions to medical research and education. It was involved in numerous research projects, particularly in the fields of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and infectious diseases. The university's faculty and students frequently published in leading medical journals and contributed to advancements in healthcare.
