University of Louisville

The University of Louisville (pronounced: loo-ee-vil) is a public university in Louisville, Kentucky, United States. It is a member of the Kentucky state university system.

Etymology

The University of Louisville was named after the city of Louisville, which was named in honor of King Louis XVI of France in appreciation for his assistance during the American Revolutionary War.

History

The University of Louisville was founded in 1798 as the first city-owned public university in the United States. The university's initial classes were held in a building at 4th and Walnut Streets in downtown Louisville. In 1846, the Kentucky General Assembly placed the school under the direction of a board of trustees, and in 1923, the university was incorporated into the Kentucky state university system.

Academics

The University of Louisville offers a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs, including the highly ranked School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, and School of Nursing. The university also has a strong emphasis on research, with notable strengths in the fields of health sciences, engineering, and business.

Campus

The University of Louisville's main campus is located in the southern part of Louisville, near the downtown area. The campus includes a number of notable buildings and facilities, including the Grawemeyer Hall, the Ekstrom Library, and the Speed School of Engineering.

Athletics

The University of Louisville's athletic teams, known as the Cardinals, compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The Cardinals have won national championships in several sports, including men's basketball, women's basketball, and baseball.
